Classes:


The Fullerton College Art classes are held in the Fine Arts Building 1000 on the north side of the college campus, except for Sculpture courses which are held in Building 2100 on the south sid of the campus below Chapman avenue. (See map for directions).

Courses offered in the Art Department include Art History, Design, Gallery and Business Practices, Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration, Ceramics, Sculpture, Jewelry/Crafts, Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, and Independent Studies.

Art History

Art 110- Introduction to Art (3 units)

This course provides an introduction to art from prehistoric time to the present. While examining the role that the visual arts have played in the development of the world's cultures, the student is exposed to a wide variety of artistic media. (CSU) (UC)

Art 112 - Art History: Ancient & Medieval (3 units)

A survey of the development of art from pre-history through the Middle Ages. Cultural, religious and historical influences on art are also studied. Three hours lecture and slide presentation per week plus fifteen minutes per week in gallery. (CSU) (UC) (Degree credit)

Art 113 - Art History: Renaissance to Modern (3 units)

A survey of the development of art from the Renaissance through the modern era. Cultural, religious and historical influences on art are also studied. Three hours lecture and slide presentation per week plus fifteen minutes per week in gallery. (CSU) (UC) (Degree credit)

Art 114 - Art History: Impressionism to The Present (3 units)

A survey of the development of art from the late 1800's to the present. Cultural, religious and historical influences on art are also studied. Three hours lecture and slide presentation per week plus fifteen minutes per week in gallery. (CSU) (UC) (Degree credit)

Art 116 - Art History: Mexico (3 units)

This course covers the visual arts of Mexico from the earliest civilizations to contemporary Mexican and Chicano art. both traditional and popular art from's are studied in the context of the cultures that produced them. (CSU) (UC) (Degree credit)

Art Design

Art 118 - Color Theory (3 units)

This course traces the historical development of color theory and provides exercises in paint mixture that have practical applications in the visual arts profession. (CSU) (UC) (Degree credit)

Art 120 - Basic Visual Design Concepts (3 units)

Foundation course in composition, color, image development, basic art elements and principles. (CSU) (UC)

Art 121 - Three-Dimensional Design (3 units)

An introduction to three dimensional design, expanding the application of design theory, techniques and materials. the focus is on objects in 360 degree format and the development of new technical skills. Successful completion of Art 120 is advised prior to taking this course. (CSU) (UC)

Art, Gallery and Business Practice

Art 122 - Gallery Design and Exhibition (2units)

This course introduces the design of exhibitions and physical workings of a college gallery. Field trips are required. Course may be taken four tomes for credit. (CSU)

Art 123 - Business Practices in Art (3units)

A course designed for designers, painters, future practitioners of art in the matters of interview techniques, resume writing, contracts and business practices. (CSU)

Advertising, Graphic Design and Illustration

Art 140 - Introduction to Advertising and Graphic Design (3 units)

Basic Course in advertising and graphic design emphasizing communication through use of concepts, type and images. Development of layout skills, style and an introduction to logotype design Students use the computer on selected products. For additional info got to http://graphicdesign.fullcoll.edu. Art 144 - Fundamentals of Cartooning (2 units)

An introduction to developing an original cartoon character. Also covered will be an overview of cartoon history. It is advised that the student complete ART 182 Basic Drawing or ART 179 Drawing for the Non-Art Major prior to taking this course. (CSU)

Art 145 - Publication Design (3 units)

This is an advanced course with emphasis on the design of publications such as brochures and magazine layouts to simulate real world assignments. finished comprehensive projects will be created on the computer to a professional quality suitable for inclusion in a student's portfolio. Art 146 - Advertising Design (3 units)

Advanced course with emphasis on design for advertising, simulating real world experience. May include advertising campaigns, posters, billboards and web sites. computer-generated finished comprehensive projects to a professional quality suitable for inclusion in student's portfolio. Art 147 - Production Techniques for Graphic Designers (3 units)

A study of methods and techniques necessary in preparing artwork for reproduction including computer generated preparation of mechanical art, electronic pre-press, typography, paper specification, and commercial printing methods. Specifically for graphic design students. A corequesite is Art 140 Introduction to Advertising and Graphic Design (CSU)

Art 148 Packaging Design (3 units)

Advanced course emphasizing design for packaging to simulate real world experience, including design for a range of 3D surfaces and materials. Computer generated professional quality finished comp projects. Basic digital photography for creating images suitable for portfolio inclusion. Art 140 Introduction to Advertising and Graphic Design and ACG 100 Introduction to Computer Graphics for the Macintosh are prerequisites for this course. (CSU)

Ceramics

Art 150A - Beginning Handbuilding (3 units)

Introduction to direct hand clay forming techniques, ceramic design and studio procedure. (CSU)(UC)

Art 150B - Beginning Throwing (3 units)

Introduction to wheel throwing techniques. Successful completion of ART 150 A is a prerequisite. (CSU)(UC)

Art 150C - Ceramics:Advanced (3 units)

This course continues the development of wheel throwing techniques and other ceramic processes. the course can be taken twice for credit. Art 150A and/or Art 150B are a prerequisite.

Art 151 - Technical Ceramics (2 units)

An investigation of clay, glazes and oxides commonly used in the craft of ceramics. Emphasis on clay materials and glaze formulation. (CSU) (UC)

Art 152 - Ceramics Laboratory (1 unit)

Lab hours where a student can use open lab to earn one unit and work on further development of their ceramics, course may be taken four time for credit. The co requisite for this course is Art 150A, 150B, 150C; Art 151 or completion of Art 150A, 150B or Art150C. (CSU) (UC)

Art 159 - Master Potters (2 units)

This course offers the experienced student an expanded knowledge of the Ceramic Arts through an in-depth study of the work of a featured Master Potter. Each semester, the work of a different Master Potter will provide inspiration for the students to analyze and emulate. This course may be repeated up to three times.

Sculpture

Art 160 - Fundamentals of Sculpture (3 units)

Develop skills in basic techniques, materials and problem solving in the development of sculptural forms, Course may be taken twice for credit. (CSU) (UC)

Art 161 - Advanced Sculpture (3 units)

Student advances from basic understanding to advanced techniques and complex sculptural forms. course may be taken twice for credit. Art 160 is a prerequisite for this course.(CSU) (UC)

Art 162 - Sculpture - Cast Metal (Bronze and Aluminum) (3 units)

An introduction to the lost wax bronze casting process, investment, vacuum and sand casting. this class includes wax model production and mold making. The cst bronze sculpture is completed by metal casting and patination. It is advised that the student take Art 160 or Art 185 before taking this class. (CSU) (UC)

Art 163 - Sculpture Open Studio (1 Unit)

Fifty-four hours of studio time, giving access to the facility and equipment for students who are concurrently enrolled in three dimensional classes, or students that have completed these courses. Course may be taken four times for credit. (CSU) (UC)

Art 185 - Life Sculpture (3 units)

This course is for the beginning through advanced sculpture student. The student learns to sculpt form live models (male and female) in clay. Course may be taken four times for credit. (CSU) (UC)

Jewelry/Crafts

Art 174 - Jewelry: Fabrication I (3 units)

Students develop skills in concept, design and technique in the manipulation of processed metals. (CSU)

Art 174 - Jewelry Fabrication II (3 units)

Student develop advanced skills in design and techniques in the articulation of complex jewelry forms. course may be taken three times for credit. (CSU)

Art 176 - Stained Glass (Architectural Fabrication for Residential and Commercial) (3 units)

Instruction in the development of a variety of stained glass processes including window making, mosaics, glass sculptures, kiln fusing and glass bead making. course may be taken four times for credit. (CSU)

Drawing

Art 139 - Fashion Sketching (2 units)

 

Introduction in the drawing of the clothed figure and basic fashion styles,. Media used includes graphite, ink, marking pens, charcoal, colored pencils, photocopy and mixed media. Rendering of fabrics and patterns included. Course may be taken three times for credit. (CSU)

Art 179 - Drawing for Non-Art Majors (2 units)

Introduction to basic drawing techniques involving shading, perspective and contour drawing. Designed for non-art majors. (CSU)

Art 180 - Perspective Drawing and Rendering (2 units)

An intermediate course with advanced understanding and application of the fundamentals of linear and atmospheric perspective. The fall semester course will emphasize rendering; spring semester will emphasize perspective. Course may be taken twice for credit. (CSU) (UC)

Art 182 - Basic Drawing (3 units)

This course introduces fundamental skills and theories of accurate observational drawing including contour line, perspective, and shading. Required by all art majors. (CSU) (UC)

Art 184 - Expressive Drawing (2 units)

Intermediate drawing course. Emphasis is on an emotionally expressive and imaginatively creative rather than an objectively representational approach to drawing. Includes experimentation with a wide variety of media. Art 182 is a prerequisite and Art 186 is advised before attempting this course(CSU) (UC)

Art 186A, B, C - Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Life Drawing (3 units each)

Courses in drawing from the human figure. Emphasis in Art 186 A is on the development of a basic understanding of structure, anatomy and movement, through the use of the skeleton and live model. Art 186 A is required of all art majors. Emphasis in Art 186B is on the refinement of basic skills and the understanding of gesture, structure, and anatomy. Art 186C is an advanced course that focuses on a review of previous drawing exercises, the refinement of techniques and advanced studio problems. Art 186b and 186C are recommended for art majors. Art 131 - Printmaking (3 units)

Painting

Art 187 - Watercolor for Non-Art Majors (2 units)

Exploration of fundamental techniques of water color for the serious non-art major. course may be taken twice for credit (CSU) (UC)

Art 188 - Watercolor Painting (3 units)

Basic to advanced instruction in watercolor painting techniques, understanding composition and watercolor mixing. Course may be taken four times for credit. (CSU) (UC)

Art 189A, B, C - Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Painting (3 units each)

Beginning Painting is an introduction to materials, techniques and concepts of both traditional and contemporary painting. Intermediate Painting is a further exploration with materials, techniques and concepts of painting. Advanced Painting explores experimentation with an emphasis on development of personal style and attitude again based on historic traditions, materials, techniques and concepts. (CSU) (UC)

Art 194 - Painting Studio Lab ( 1 to 2 units)

Fifty-four hours of laboratory per one unit in the painting studio. Painting activities include improving skill level, furthering technical development, exploring diverse media and developing personal subject matter and style. May be taken for credit up to a maximum of four units. (Credit/No Credit Only)

Independent Study

Art 299 - Art Independent Study

For the serious student who wishes advanced, personalized instruction beyond the standard course work. Course subject to instructor approval and the student must sign up with an instructor in the Art Department before registering for this class. The completed course form must be in the Art Department Office by the second week of class. (CSU) (UC Credit limitation)
